UN peacekeeper injured in South Sudan

United Nations, May 29 (IANS): A UN peacekeeper was injured Thursday in crossfire between warring groups in South Sudan, according to the secretary general's spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric.

Dujarric said the information about the incident in Malakel was just coming in and he could not as yet identify the injured peacekeeper or the nationality.

There is a large presence of Indian peacekeepers in Malakel, where they are protecting about 25,000 refugees.

The area has been wracked by fighting between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir Mayardit and supporters of Riek Machar Teny of Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A).
