Mangalore, Apr 12: Close on the heels of the state government’s decision to introduce Konkani as the third optional language from standard sixth, honorary secretary of state Konkani Linguistic Minority Educational Institutions’ Association Dr K Mohan Pai has said that the students can study the language either in Devanagiri or Kannnada script.

A press release from the Association stated that the decision was taken following the recommendations of a task force set up for the purpose.

Although the state Konkani Sahitya Academy had opposed the usage of Devanagari script, the association vouched for the usage of both the scripts. The Association had also backed the usage of Devenagari script for Konkani on currency notes, the release stated.

The Association comprises of 18 managements, which will administer the 40 schools. Konkani will be taught in schools as the third optional language from the coming academic year.

The release further stated that the department of educational research and training has offered to print textbooks in the both the scripts.
