Five militants killed in Afghan attack


Kabul, June 1 (IANS): Five Taliban militants were killed in an attack on a police station in Afghanistan's Nangarhar province, an official said on Monday.

Militants stormed the police station in the provincial capital of Jalalabad late on Sunday night, Xinhua news agency reported.

"About six militants were engaged in the attack. The security forces carried out a counter-attack which ended early on Monday," the official said.

"Five militants were killed in the clashes and one militant was detained by security forces."

The armed militants stormed the rear gate of the police station after detonating two car bombs, he added.

A Taliban militant group has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.
