Militants attack mobile phone tower in Srinagar

Srinagar, June 1 (IANS): Separatist guerrillas on Monday attacked a cell phone tower here with a hand grenade, injuring one person, police said.

"Gunmen lobbed a hand grenade at a cell phone tower, injuring one person," a senior police officer told IANS here.

The injured has been identified as Imtiyaz Ahmad Ahanger - brother of the tower's owner - and a resident of the Gadood Bagh area of Habakadal locality in Srinagar city.

Last week, two civilians associated with cell phone business were killed in north Kashmir, resulting in disruption of telecommunication services in many parts of Sopore town and its adjoining areas.

Lesser-known guerrilla outfit 'Lashkar-e-Islam' had claimed responsibility for the attack and issued threats to service providers to wind up their operations in Kashmir.

Police had recovered a hi-tech communication device atop a Sopore cell phone phone tower last month, which was reportedly used by guerrillas to improve their communication.
