Bengal: 400 Bangladeshi illegal immigrants held in May


Kolkata, June 1 (IANS): The Border Security Force (BSF) apprehended 400 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and seized contraband worth over Rs.7 crore across West Bengal in May, officials said.

"Besides a large number of contraband and fake Indian currency notes (FICNs), we have apprehended 400 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in May from across the South Bengal frontier," a BSF officer said.

The troopers also detained 154 Indians for trying to illegally cross the international border in May.

"On the smuggling front, we have seized over 16 kg of gold worth over Rs.44 lakh, nearly 42,000 bottles of Phensedyl, valued around Rs.40 lakh, and other contraband items and cattle heads worth Rs.6.23 crore," the officer added.

Fake Indian currency notes with a face value of Rs.74 lakh and 146.5 kg of ganja were also seized from various parts of the border.
