Police to probe attack on UP activist

Lucknow, June 3 (IANS): Inspector General of Police Amitabh Thakur on Wednesday said police will probe a serious attack on a Uttar Pradesh activist who has blamed a minister and a police officer for it.

Thakur told IANS that he has asked the Shahjahanpur district police chief to pursue the matter with a "neutral and objective" frame of mind.

He said a request has also been made to Director General of Police A.K. Jain to get the matter properly investigated.

Social media activist and journalist Jagendra sustained 60 percent burn injuries when he was attacked at Shahjahanpur on June 1.

Jagendra alleged that a minister had ordered his men to earlier beat him up on April 24. He complained that despite requests, he was not provided police protection.

IGP Thakur visited the activist at the Civil Hospital here on Wednesday.

The activist says he has become a target because he had publicised allegations of corruption and land grabbing against the minister.
