75 killed in Ghana gas station fire

Accra, June 4 (IANS): At least 75 people were killed in a gas station fire near the Nkrumah circle in Ghana's capital Accra, media reported on Thursday.

The Goil Filling Station at the Nkrumah Circle in Accra caught fire during Wednesday’s torrential rains, the Daily Guide newspaper reported.

The Ghana National Fire Service has confirmed that officially 75 people are dead and fears the number could rise as the salvage operation continues.

It is, however, unclear what sparked the inferno at the service station behind the GCB Towers and opposite the Vienna City night club.

The inferno followed hours of heavy downpour in the capital that led to power outages in several communities.

Accra is flooded following torrential rain that continued for several hours.
