CISCE to introduce digital tool for faster, accurate results

Kolkata, June 4 (IANS): The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) will introduce 'Live Ink Character Recognition' (LICR) Solution tool in 2016 for faster declaration of exam results with greater accuracy.

The LICR Solution technology incorporates a repurposed digital pen and tablet to be used by examiners while evaluating answer scripts and would help publish results in shorter time period, said CISCE chief executive and secretary Gerry Arathoon on Thursday.

The council conducts both Indian School Certificate (ISC) exams for Class 12 and the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) exams for Class 10 in India.

While examiners will use normal pens to evaluate answersheets, they will use the LICR pen to fill in slots positioned on top of each answersheet page against each question, Arathoon told the media here.

This top sheet of the answer script will show the summary of marks obtained by an examinee. The examiners would put in marks obtained for every individual question on the top sheet.

Designed by Orion India Systems Private Limited, the new tool would enable the awarded marks to be transferred to the CISCE servers in a swift and secure manner.

He claimed the system was "fool-proof" and if an examiner wanted to make changes, he or she would have to do so on the top sheet itself and not on the tab.

A pilot run of the new technology was a success during paper evaluation of this year's ISC and ICSE examinations.

Arathoon also said the technology would not require any special training for the examiners.

"The technology used for the purpose is not only secure but also requires no training for the examiners. It will help the council make a detailed question-by-question performance analysis of the results," the CISCE chief executive said.
