Mumbai, Apr 17: State Energy Minister Dilip Walse Patil could do well to visit Mumbai Mayor Shubha Raul and take some ideas on power generation from her.
Raul, who attended the 4th World’s Mayor Summit in Istanbul from April 15 to 17, claims to be impressed with the techniques the city’s municipal corporation employs to generate power, using waste.
Raul was the only woman among 48 mayors from across the world to attend the summit, where urban issues pertaining to their respective cities were discussed.
“Since we are witnessing power cuts, we must employ those means here,” said Raul, adding, “I was also impressed by the citizens’ civic sense and cleanliness measures employed in Istanbul. It’s very unlike our city. I did not find people spitting and littering on the road.”
Raul also raised the issue of slum sanitation and traffic at the summit. She discussed the initiatives and urban development schemes undertaken by both, the municipal corporation and the state, to tackle the problem. “Many other mayors also spoke of the effect the two problems had on their corporations. The world collectively needs to work to find answers to these urban scourges,” she lamented.
