Coalition airstrikes destroy IS car-bomb factory in Iraq

Baghdad, June 4 (IANS): Airstrikes launched by the US-led international coalition struck an Islamic State (IS) car-bomb factory in northern Iraq, a security official told Efe news agency on Thursday.

Raids launched Wednesday night hit large amounts of explosives in the factory, triggering a series of blasts in al-Hauija town, 70 km southwest of the oil city of Kirkuk.

The security official added there was no information to confirm the number of casualties in the attack, as the area was completely controlled by IS.

The airstrikes came two days after at least 30 combatants from the Shia Popular Mobilization forces were killed and 40 others were wounded in a suicide car bombing in Baiji city, north of Baghdad.

Iraq has been the epicentre of a fierce war with the jihadi organization since last June, when the IS proclaimed a caliphate in the areas it controls in Iraq and neighbouring Syria.
