Defence minister condemns Manipur attack


New Delhi, June 4 (IANS): Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Thursday condemned the ambush attack on army personnel in Manipur and condoled the deaths, defence ministry spokesperson Sitanshu Kar said.

"Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar condemns the attack on army personnel in Manipur," Kar said in a tweet.

The spokesperson said the defence minister has asserted that "those who committed the cowardly act will be brought to book".

Parrikar added that army will continue to work towards bringing peace and normalcy to the state of Manipur and conveyed "deepest condolence" to the bereaved families of the armymen who lost their lives.

According to latest reports, at least 20 soldiers were killed and 11 others injured when militants ambushed their convoy in Manipur on Thursday in the worst such attack on the Indian Army in a decade, an official said.

A team of 6 Dogra Regiment was on a routine road opening patrol in the morning in Chandel district when the attack occurred between Paralong and Charong villages.
