Bangladesh confers Award of Liberation War Honour on Vajpayee

Dhaka, Jun 7, 2015, (PTI) Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was today conferred Award of Bangladesh Liberation War Honour for his "active role" in the country's independence struggle and consolidating India's friendship with the nation.

Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid handed over the award to Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a glittering ceremony at Bangabhaban, the President's house, which was attended by Premier Sheikh Hasina and top officials of her government.

"This day is a matter of great pride for all Indians that a great leader like Atal Bihari Vajpayee is being honoured. He dedicated his entire life to the service of the country and he fought for the rights of the common man and from a political point of view he was our inspiration for political workers like myself," Modi said after receiving the award.

Modi said that when muktijodhas (freedom fighters) of Bangladesh were shedding blood, Indians too were fighting side-by-side with them and in a way helped realise the dream of Bangladesh.

He said he was one of the young volunteers who came to Delhi to participate in a Satyagraha launched by Jana Sangh to support Bangladeshi freedom fighters in 1971. He also recalled Vajpayee's speech in Parliament on December 6, 1971 in which he had asked government to recognise Bangladesh as a nation.

"If Atalji's health permitted and he was present here, this occasion would be very different," Modi said.

The citation of the Award hailed Vajpayee as a "highly respected political leader" and recognised his "active role" in support of the liberation war of Bangladesh. It said that as President of Bharatiya Jana Sangh and a member of the Lok Sabha Vajpayee took various steps towards that end.

"In an editorial column of the 'Organiser' Vajpayee welcomed Bangabandu Sheikh Mujibur Rehman's historic declaration of Bangladesh's independence and called upon the government of India to recognise the government of Bangladesh and provide necessary assistance to the freedom fighters," the citation said.

It also recognised Jana Sangh's role in pressing the demand for Indian government's "expedited support" to the liberation war.

Shame on Bangladesh government!!!! you'll waited for so many decades to give the award for the liberation of your country to Shri. Vajpayee who played a very minor role in the struggle for independence, and have ignored those who played a major role. What would it have cost you to acknowledge all of them?

Our late prime minister Indira Gandhi was instrumental,in creation of Bangladesh.Even Mr.Vajapayee called he ''DURGA''!
But Mr.Vajapayee also played crucial role, the reason of which may be he is honoured by Bangladeshi govt.

It is totally Bangladesh govt. decision to honour Mr.Vajapayee I feel.

So far as I understand, no cash has been handed over to Bangladesh yet.

But a major part of what the Indian Government wants to achieve is enhance power generation and distribution in Bangladesh, to be owned/managed by the companies of Adani and Reliance.

So essentially the declared gift will be handed over not directly to Bangladesh, but mainly to the two Indian companies.

I do not know if the Reliance holding companies are registered in Mauritius (where tax is 3%), but it has come to the fore that Adani's holding companies apparently are based in Mauritius and not in India.

What I see is this: the Indian taxpayers' money is handed over to the two companies favoured by the current central government - which, there is reason to believe, may not pay tax in India. Despite that the two companies may receive permanent protection of the Indian Government should they face some issues in Bangladesh in future.

When the full story becomes clear about the workings of the current central government, RSS and VHP will be very disappointed indeed.

If you search google for "adani-a-dud-candidate-for-government-support", you will see an article in today's Australian newspapers.

According to the article, Adani is a lot of noise but very little substance.

The article states "Adani Mining in Australia is owned by an Adani company in Singapore, which is in turn owned by an Adani company in Mauritius."

So, the current Indian PM (who got tremendous help from Adani during the election campaign) should be excused for providing all-out-help in saving his benefactor from the impending doom.
