Human trafficking cases double in Myanmar

Yangon, June 8 (IANS): Cases of human trafficking have doubled in Myanmar over the first five months of this year as compared to 2014, an official report said on Monday.

Of the total of 56, Shan state recorded 15 cases -- the highest number, followed by Mandalay and Yangon with 10 and seven cases, Xinhua reported.

Myanmar authorities have arrested 93 traffickers, according to the report.

Victims are often lured by traffickers by work or marriage offers, it added.

According to the figures, the number of human trafficking cases in Myanmar from 2006 to May 2015 reached 1,179 nationwide with police arresting 2,199 traffickers and rescuing more than 2,000 victims.
