South Korean president delays US visit amid MERS crisis

Seoul, Jun 10 (IANS): South Korean President Park Geun-hye has delayed her visit to the US due to the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) crisis, a presidential office statement said on Wednesday.

Park decided to postpone next week's trip to the US to contain the MERS spread as early as possible, Xinhua news agency quoted the senior presidential press secretary as saying.

Park was scheduled to hold a summit with US President Barack Obama on June 16.

The delay comes amid the unabated MERS crisis in the country, where the number of confirmed infections surged to 108, just three weeks after the first case was identified on May 20.

The two countries agreed to reschedule Park's trip to Washington at an earliest possible date.
