KMC emerges as national model for e-services

Kolkata, June 10 (IANS): The union urban development ministry has hailed the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) for emerging as a national role model in providing e-services to citizens, city mayor Sovon Chatterjee said on Wednesday.

"Today (Wednesday), we received a letter from the union urban development ministry congratulating us for our e-services. Our e-services have emerged as a role model for the entire country," Chatterjee said.

"The ministry has also asked us to share the model with other cities for emulation," the mayor said.

The KMC has set up e-centres providing online services like assessment of taxes and fees, grant and renewal of licences, permission and issues concerning buildings, water supply, drainage, issuing birth certificates etc.

"Computers at these centres are connected to the KMC headquarters through KMC-Net, and all the data are stored in the central server, offering a very high security to citizen's vital and confidential information," Chatterjee added.
