Washington, June 12 (IANS): A teenager has pleaded guilty in a US federal court to charges of providing material support to the Islamic State (IS) terror group.

Ali Shukri Amin, 17, pleaded guilty in Virginia state of the US on Thursday to accusations of passing information between IS contacts using social media to promote the group, teaching supporters how to use bitcoin (a form of digital currency) to send funds to the terror organisation and helping another teenager Reza Niknejad, 18, travel to Syria to allegedly join the jihadis, reported CNN online.

He admitted to using the twitter handle "@Amreekiwitness" to "provide advice and encouragement to IS and its supporters", according to a justice department statement.

"Around the nation, we are seeing IS use social media to reach out from the other side of the world," Assistant Attorney General John P. Carlin said.

"Their messages are reaching America in an attempt to radicalise, recruit and incite our youth and others to support IS's violent causes."

Amin will be sentenced on August 28.
