Bangalore / New Delhi, Apr 23: The Supreme court today advised states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to put their heads together to find an amicable sloution to the problem of sharing Cauvery water.

A bench comprising justice S B Sinha and Justice Markandey Katju while fixing the hearing of writ petition filed by M/s Cauvery Water United Association Bangalore and others for next week told the petitioner as well as respondents which include the Centre as well as the state of Tamil Nadu to find a solution instead of forcing the court to pass an order in accordance with law.

The judges made it clear that the legal order may please one side and disappoint the other and cannot satisfy all.

The court also blamed unchecked construction activity being indulged in tha major cities of the country for vanquishing all sources of water harvesting and conservation like tanks and said every major city is facing severe water crisis because of unchecked construction activity by the people.

Senior counsel Harish Salve appeared for the petitioner and contended that city of Bangalore was facing severe drinking water crisis due to the attitude of Tamil Nadu which was not giving its share of water from river Cauvery.

Senior counsel K Parasaran appeared for the state of Tamil Nadu.
