Shame: Taxi drivers harass, chase woman passenger at Mangaluru airport

Airport taxi service denies charges; director issues warning; Ola says it won't let matter die

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (CLP)

Updated

Mangaluru, Jun 15: A day after a lady filed a complaint alleging harassment by taxi drivers at Mangaluru airport for hiring an Ola cab, the Mangalore Airport Taxi Service denied the allegations and asserted that they were right in opposing the Ola cab.

Speaking to daijiworld, Kenny D'Cunha, treasurer of Mangalore Airport Taxi Service denied that the lady passenger had been harassed or chased by the taxi drivers, as alleged.

"The allegations are baseless. We have a set of rules that prohibits taxi drivers from talking to the passenger party. The taxi drivers did not even talk to her. They can check the CCTVs. We are not afraid," he said.

Regarding alleged manhandling of the Ola driver, he said, "Ola service does not have permission for pickup from rural areas. We have held three-four meetings with the authorities on this to decide the routes, but the Ola officials never turned up for the meetings. If they had, we could have decided on this issue.

"Ola does not have proper documents. Ola cabs are allowed in the airport only if they inform the airport taxi service first and register at the airport counter. In this case, the Ola driver had not registered, and when we confronted him, he apologized saying he did not know about it. The taxi drivers then told him to go, but they did not manhandle him," Kenny said.

Asked about the FIR filed in the police station against the drivers, Kenny said, "She (complainant) must have been angry that cab driver was told to go back. Her allegations are false. We never attacked her."

"We followed all the rules. If Ola had registered the pickup beforehand, there would have been no problem. They (Ola drivers) are not following rules so the airport taxi drivers got angry," he added.

We have permit to operate at airport; won't take this lying down: Ola

Meanwhile, speaking to daijiworld, Ola cab service said that the company was unhappy about the incident and would not take it lying down.

"As the driver in question has taken leave, we came to know about the incident only through daijiworld. We are very unhappy that our driver and a passenger were harassed this way, and we will not take this lying down," an official from Ola said.

Asked about Mangalore Airport Taxi Service's allegations that Ola did not have permission to operate at the airport, he said, "We are allowed to pick up and drop passengers at Mangaluru airport, and we have already discussed this with the airport director. All documents have been submitted to the authorities concerned. We have permit to operate all over the state, but considering safety of women, we operate withing a radius of 100 km in the city, wherever GPS functions."

He further said that this was not the first such incident at the airport. "In the past also, our drivers have been assaulted by taxi drivers at the airport. Even the police did not help - instead they just stood there and recorded the incident on their phones. We then had a meeting with the goons (a term he used for taxi drivers) last time, but about 50-60 people tried to assault us. That is why we do not want to have any meetings with them. Our drivers feel highly insecure about driving to the airport, as they fear someone would assault them.

"We have attended RTA meetings and given all documents and we have the permit to run. We do police verification of all drivers and install GPS in our cabs. If we do not do this who will take the responsibility if something goes wrong?" the official said.

Asked if Ola would take any action in the matter, he said, "This incident has affected not only our driver but also the lady passenger. We will consult our legal advisor and do everything to provide justice to the driver and the passenger. We will not allow this issue to die down. Safety is of utmost importance to us and we will not compromise on it."

He also said that as per advice from the RTA, Ola has removed its stickers from its cabs for safety. "In case they (taxi drivers) have any problems about our documents, they should fight the case legally in court. We will not tolerate such illegal means," he asserted.

No problem with Ola; issued stern warning to taxi drivers: Airport director

When contacted, the airport authorities initially said that they had no idea about the incident at all. However, later a meeting was called with the taxi drivers.

Speaking to daijiworld, airport director J T Radhakrishnan said, "We have already called a meeting and issued stern warning and notice to the taxi drivers. During the meeting, the taxi drivers denied having harassed or chased the lady passenger and said she hired an auto rickshaw from outside the airport itself. They said all they did was to oppose the Ola cab.

"In future if this repeats, we will take strict action against the guilty. We will not support such acts. We are ready to cooperate with the police," he added.

Asked if Ola had permit to operate at the airport, he replied in the affirmative and said, "There is no problem with Ola operating at the airport. We have already given them permit to do so. There is some legal dispute between the taxi drivers' association and Ola, and this is an issue not only at the airport but in the city limits too. The airport authority has no problem with Ola."

Asked why no action has been taken against the taxi drivers despite repeated complaints, he said, "They have been working at the airport from many years. Many of them lost their lands during airport expansion and were given this job. But now time has come to stop supporting those who indulge in such acts. We have to maintain our standards. Mangaluru airport is ranked second best in India and we will do our best to maintain it."

On what action would be taken if such incidents occur again, he said it can't be decided as of now.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the case has been transferred from women police station to Bajpe police, but the latter said that they have not received an intimation yet.

Shame: Taxi drivers harass, chase woman passenger at Mangaluru airport

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jun 15: In a shocking, disgusting incident that brings to light not only the issue of women's safety but also the high-handedness of taxi drivers at Mangaluru airport and the apathy of the airport security, a woman was allegedly harassed, threatened and abused by a bunch of taxi drivers, just because her family had booked an Ola cab for her instead of hiring one of them.

As per a complaint filed in the women's police station on Sunday June 14, a copy of which is with daijiworld, Sapna (name changed to protect privacy), an IT professional, had been to Bengaluru on work on June 10. On June 12, she hurried back to Mangaluru on board a Jet Airways flight, after receiving news of her father-in-law's critical condition and needing to see him in his last moments. She landed in Mangaluru at 4 pm the same day.

Her family members had booked an Ola cab online so that she could come home from the airport immediately without the hassle of finding taxis. However, when she walked out from the airport and headed towards the waiting Ola cab, she saw a group of taxi drivers (associated with the airport) manhandling the Ola cab driver, identified as Mohammed (as per the complaint). The taxi drivers had snatched away the key of the cab, and Mohammed was begging them to return it, says Sapna.

"This group of drivers finally forced the Ola cab driver to run away and warned him not to pick me up anywhere, (not) even outside the airport premises. No officers of the airport came to our rescue," says Sapna.

To her horror, Sapna herself was allegedly abused, chased and threatened by the taxi drivers and stopped from getting into the Ola taxi.

In the midst of this harassment, she reported her ordeal over mobile phone to her family, who were already battling an emotional struggle back home. "I contacted my husband immediately over the mobile and he managed to contact the (Ola) driver again and he convinced him to wait outside the collection gate of the airport premises. When I started walking, the taxi drivers started chasing me, and looking at this, the cab driver ran away," Sapna said.

Speaking to daijiworld, Sapna's husband said, "The taxi driver who was beaten struggled for his life, and in his frantic effort of pleading and fighting, took flight with his taxi out of the airport, leaving her stranded with the swearing drivers of the airport taxis."

(Representational Pic)

The nightmare did not end there. Sapna further states in the complaint, "I had no other option but to run from a group of gunda drivers who started chasing me further for almost two kilometers. They were chasing me with abusive, life-threatening language, loose talk, attempted molestation and outraged (my) modesty with criminal force.

"They also threatened that they would kill me if I use Ola cab again while coming out of Mangaluru airport. They also said that they had full support from Mangalore Airport authorities and Bajpe police station to manhandle Ola cab drivers and Ola passengers. When I mentioned that I would file a police complaint and also complain with Mangalore Airport authorities, they insulted me saying the local police and the airport authorities are in their pockets and they are doing this with their consent," she said.

"Though this incident took place in front of the airport security, no officers came to her aid nor did anyone dare to put an end to this atrocity," her husband said.

Finally, when she reached Kavoor-Bajpe road, a kind-hearted rickshaw driver came to her rescue and she managed to get out of her helpless plight and reach her family who live inside the city limits.

Her nightmare turned into deep sorrow and grief when Sapna learnt that her father-in-law had passed away just minutes before she reached home. "Due to the troubles, inconvenience, harassment and lack of security at the airport for women passengers, I went through a lot of psychological trauma and the last opportunity to see my father-in-law alive was lost forever," she said.

She also said that though she wanted to file the complaint immediately, she could not as her father-in-law's funeral was held on Saturday June 13. An FIR has been lodged in women's police station based on Sapna's statement. She, in her complaint, also pleaded to conduct an inquiry against the director of Airport Authority, Mangaluru for lapse of duties and responsibilities.

Says her husband, "This is one of the many incidents I have heard of first-hand experiences from other citizens of Mangaluru who have faced similar situations at other public transport facilities like railway stations too. Citizens of metropolitan cities and semi-urban cities have the freedom of choice to select the mode of transport convenient to them.

"Mangaluru has witnessed this transition lately with taxi systems, but this is posing serious problems for its citizens being harassed and monopolized by force to pay exorbitantly high fares to avail airport taxi drop services. Charges range between Rs 600 - Rs 700 for city drop from the airport taxis while local taxi services like Mangi, Ola, City Cab, Taxi-for-Sure offer about Rs 250 - Rs 300 with premium AC service. These benefits to citizens are seen as a threat by the public transport taxis vested interests who are hand-in-glove with the authorities. This again brings to light the security threat to women and other passengers who travel late evenings," he felt.

Ironically, only days ago, Mangaluru airport was rated second best in the country in terms of customer satisfaction, in a survey of airports with less than 1.5 million passengers annually.

    1. Yesterday night a TV channel made a farcical show of the incident of molestation of a lady at Mangalore airport. We were appalled by this one sided show where in the attacker of the lady were given a free hand at blowing their own trumpet on their past achievements and how they were right in manhandling the driver of OLA cab and preventing the lady to get into the car by bruit force.
    2. The anchor was bent upon proving at all costs that the OLA was at fault by not attending his show. Further he insinuated that OLA cab did not care for their driver and left him in the lurch.
    3. He failed to understand and thus failed to explain that the Lady in question is the main complainant and the charge was that she was molested and prevented from boarding a car she hired.
    4. Instead of asking them why they were following the lady abusing her with filthy language all the way down the ramp, he allowed both of the drivers to elaborate on the things they did or didn’t do in the past and allowed them to repeatedly narrate how law abiding they are and such bla….bla ….bla ….
    5. And TV anchor failed to point out that what they did is immoral policing and they were not allowed to take law into their own hands as an International Airport is not their ancestral property to be guarded, even if they claim they are the sons of the soil.
    6. OLA thought it proper not to indulge worth less arguments when they were not directly involved in this incident.
    7. These taxi drivers were talking about the rules of registration at air port, but are they allowed to harass the passenger just because she chose the option she chose best for her?
    8. Further most of the callers are either family members of the drivers or the office bearers of Auto or taxi unions, and to believe that they will side with the passengers plight will be like living in fools paradise. And many calls were silenced before hearing makes me wonder the motives of the anchor, while the comments by the public in Daijiworld and Times of India gives the true picture of public opinion.
    9. The support by some of our MLAs or even ministers for these heinous crime by the taxi drivers cannot be ruled out and they must understand public is keenly watching!

    10. The complaint is filed by the lady at a Ladies police station and will be transferred to the Bajpe police station today and we all support this brave lady no matter what.

    11. This alone makes us relay on Daijiwolrld news even more. Thank you Daiji

    Dear Readers,

My advise to all if we face similar situation in future:

    1. Do not confront the rogue elements
    2. Note the registration number of the vehicle or any other visual evidence
    3. Be alert and remember the face and identity of the rogue elements
    3. Immediately report to the police or security agencies. Do not hesitate.
    4. Follow up with the Police till the action is taken.
    5. As per the "Sakal" scheme introduced by BJP Govt., Police or any other Dept. should take action within 15 days.

We should have faith in Police as we have in God. Whether we get justice or not, we should give complaint to them. This will definitely infuse fear among the rogue elements and reduce number of crimes.

Why the President and Secretary of this taxi association are hiding? Is this association is without any President / Secretary or whether they themselves are involved?

Thanks daiji for being the leader in bringing out this factual news. The taxi drivers in Bajpe are not even wearing their uniforms or badges. Let the uniforms be made compulsory. Airport Authority pls teach them how to dress decently or how to have a clean shave. Taxi service is a hospitality service.

It is wonderful that even the director of the airport telling that Ola cab service has taken permission to operate from airport. The treasurer of airport taxi service telling that they are not registered with airport authority. I am asking is this believable?

I think the treasurer receive some percentage from taxi drivers in daily basis therefore supporting goondas. The taxi drivers are charging Rs700.00 a huge amount for passengers. I think the treasurer do not encourage Ola cabs for this reason. Strict police inquiry against the treasurer is very much required. Without getting any benefit nobody support goondas And giving false informations against Ola cab on behalf of taxi drivers in front of media.

There were many such incidents that have happened at Mangalore Airport when OLA drivers tried to pick up passengers the Airport. I myself was a victim of such incident. I had booked a OLA car, and the driver of the OLA car refused to come to the pick up point at the terminal fearing assault and damage to his car by the so called goons (airport taxi drivers). I often use OLA cars, particularly to reach the Airport and I hear from these OLA drivers that they are scared to pick up passengers from airport as they are manhandled, abused and threatened. I stay in Ballal Baug, Mangalore and OLA costs me Rs. 185/- (AC Car) for pickup from Airport and at my residence as against Rs. 550/- charged by Airport Taxi. Where is the fairness in rental??? We are in a democratic country and are we not allowed to chose the mode of transport which is beneficial to us? What is this jungle Raj in the Mangalore Airport? Is the government is run by Taxi drivers of Mangalore Airport? What the Airport Authorities / Police are doing on this matter when the incoming passengers are suffering from the Airport Taxi Mafia?

OLA is providing a level playing field in this sector. Taxi drivers are resorting to unfair and restrictive business/service practices and they now have manhandled a lady passenger. High-time to bring them back to civility. The more Mr. President and Mr. Secretary speak and defend, the more it is clear that something untoward has happened. People need to boycott taxi services in the city to give these criminals a befitting lesson. Support taxi aggregates like OLA who are offering best tariff and services. Do not allow anybody to monopolize the sector. The taxi drivers concerned and their union functionaries together shall be booked under relevant IPC Sections. Meanwhile, citizens of Mangalore need to give them a stern lesson to these taxi drivers by boycotting their services. Let this service sector operate on basic business principles/ethics and pricing be on demand and supply curve. If this trend is allowed to continue, they may rob the passengers en-route and Secretary will defend that nothing of that sort ever happened. If the business is not viable, you are free to quit it.....!

Boss.. you don't know what is happening in Bajpe Air Port. There are around 150 taxis are supposed to be there inside parking as per the registers of the air port. However the actual number is almost double? How is this possible? Because many taxis have got duplicate printed stickers. Once one taxi moves out, one more taxi which is the proxy of the previous comes in with duplicate sticker. Also some owners have got 6 to 7 taxis in the it name or on the names of their family members. Parking slots are being traded on black for a rate of 6 to 8 laks. All these transactions are being controlled and supported by some big mafia. You must have heard about regular gold smuggling through mangalore air port. There is people who say that gold smuggling also inter linked with this issue.I am sorry if I am wrong for any of my statements here because all I expressed what is heard and talked around. I don't have any evidence to prove. But one urgent inquiry is needed into all this aspects in the interest of passengers safety and the safety of our country. There may be hardly 20 to 30 true land lovers in their entire taxi group. Need not sympathize for them because even they can operate their taxis for OLA. They can earn more if they are willing to work rather than sitting idle there. I have seen many taxi drivers playing rummy and I SPIT games and cards inside airport premises. What the air port authority say about this.

These cab drivers were looting people from years. The lands which they must have lost were worth peanuts then. They must have earned the value of those land within a month of their Taxi service.
FYI Even now the value of per cents land in Bajpe rural area is not more than a lakh.
Stop showing the feeling of compassion and sorrow towards these goons.
    SAY NO TO AIRPORT TAXI.

Yesterday I was watching the response of the treasurer of taxi drivers association in TV channels. Why association is intervening in this episode? Complaint is not against the association but against the specific taxi drivers who got into rowdy behaviours. It is evident from the TV discussions yesterday that the association is sponsoring rowdism in airport. First of all is this association registered? If registered do their bye laws permit them to do all these illegal activities? Citizens need to urgently give one complaint with Registrar of Societies to re check and if needed to cancel their registration for being working beyond the scope of their bye laws. During Manipal rape case incident, auto drivers association s have condemned the incident and cooperated with police to identify the victims. Whereas in this case association leaders are supporting the crime. Pls keep this association under suspension. Registrar if Societies Mangalore kindly start su moto action.

Your formula is good for business and earn with competition but Indians will not follow this... They fool others and earn more. You go to the Hospitals, travel agents, grocery etc. In business you take only one customer and fully satisfy him than he will go and tell that your service is good and 99 customers will come to you but if you satisfy 5 customer and fool 5 customers, these 5 customer will tell you are dishonest than your 5 customers who are satisfied also will go from you.

The taxi driver registered with our only family name. The Airport taxi drivers did not allow three of us to go in same taxi. Instead they made us to hire one more taxi from the airport to reach same place. When we told them we were three brothers and going to the same place to our home they did not listen, when we resist, they all jumped on us with all sorts of bad words.

    People,

After going through most of the comments about this ,,,I have come to the conclusion we could have a simple and painless solution for this...

Start KSRTC Volvo AC Bus Service from and to Mangalore Airport to Mangalore Main bus stop and Railway Station as well as Udupi and Manipal bus stands...

These buses should start when they are full or within half an hour...sufficient buses should be placed for this service(say 12-24)...with reasonable price say Rs 100...

Trust me 90% of travelers will not use these thug driven airport taxis...

    Will this happen? No...
Why not? Because our politicians will not allow this because they are selfish and self centered and they care two hoots for well being of voters once they are elected...

These low life's don't care for well being of Citizens they only care how their stomach is filled and get their votes...

It clearly shows by the comments how frustrated people are with these Airport Taxi service and their expensive rates. These cabs even spoiled other local taxi drivers, because they too charge same saying up and down charges.
Also the booking agent in airport misguides to hire expensive taxis saying your luggage is too much, go for Innova or the car he wishes. Passenger has no option.

I request all passengers boycott these taxis. They as a union denied the right of ours (Sapna). So all passengers get together and say no to them. We passengers are reason for their income and not vise versa. Common give it back all passengers.

To those who press disagree button , without actually understanding what is written, here is some further explanation.

Taxis which ply short routes only cannot be compared with a taxi which plies long routes . Depreciation on the 2 cars is somewhat fixed and will affect the costing of the trips to a large extent . Therefore , someone who undertakes long routes has a greater chance of absorbing this depreciation cost than the person who undertakes shorter trips. The pricing therefore will be different :)

15 days back I landed from Mumbai to travel to Manipal. Since the options available was less, unlike Bangalore Volvo bus system, I was forced to book an airport taxi to Mangalore service bus stand, so that I could catch an AC KSRTC bus from there. I had pre-paid 500/- Rs to travel from Mangalore air port to Mangalore service bus stand and came out with the paid slip. The driver was murmuring with his friends about more number of passengers traveling to bus stand rather than going far away places. While travelling he played different tricks to dump me to Lalbaugh rather than taking me to service bus stand. At Nathoor he tried to fool me that traffic jam due to a major accident and further he tried to convince me that majority of Udupi-Manipal buses run empty till Lalbaugh etc etc. Since I am a native of undivided Dakshina kananada I could sense all these 3rd class tricks by that buffoon! These goons will definitely try their trick in front of outsiders and might succeeded majority of times!!
We South Canareans claim to be more educated and helpful...my foot!!
Our politicians are pushing their fingers inside taxi driver association and auto drivers association to get votes! Bus owners have turned into ministers!! My suggestion is allow good service buses to take all these passengers carefully to their home. These buses will occupy less space and no reason to hunt or chase passengers. All will go directly. Let there be strict discipline. Keep the name of city it needs to be.

    Dear Mangalore Airport Authority.

Please provide shuttle services to Mangalore and Manipal round the clock.
MIA has recorded an operating profit of Rs 164.9 million during 2012–13. In 2013–14 it handled a 1.25 million passengers with revenues of Rs 638.9 million.

Even if they spend 1% of the profit it is enough to provide shuttle services.

The previous AC shuttle services were cancelled because the taxi lobby pressure on politicians.

The shuttle service need not make profit. But such convenience should be provided in growing city like Mangalore.

I will never hire Taxi services from Mangalore. The drivers are rude and arrogant.

This type of problem not just in airport. It is also in some of the Rickshaw stands. Eg. Srinivas college, Valachil. They dont allow outside auto to pick any one. Locals rule particular area. Nobody complains and so this continues everywhere. If someone questions this then they will reply only you are having problem no one else has any complaints regarding, why are you unnecessarily taking this now etc. If you go to the Hotels they give half boiled chapathi or rice (even sometimes I get stone or hard pieces in the food) and when I inform them about this they give the similar reply "you are the only one to find mistake, others just eat and go away", as if I have done big mistake by telling the truth. Unless people especially locals if they start questioning then this type of incident can be stopped.

They should stop allowing cab or private cars coming to arrival floor unless for a wheelchair passenger. Even the MLA MP or any VIP should take their cars from the ground floor after taking the escalator or the lift. This will completely stop all nuisances happening there at arrival.
They should stop collecting toll because there is no such facility or covered parking in the airport so the parking toll is not justified.

Good thing the Mangalore airport has prepaid taxi facilities on arrival. Airport authorities should allow one or more private cab operators to operate from the airport for competition and to provide better services,. Also the passengers given a choice to call private car and/or private cabs. Airport authorities may implement entry charges, if necessary. May I request Daijiworld to bring the people's comments to the attention of Airport authorities to take appropriate action on this case.

It is very sad that Mangalore Airport is under the mercy and control of the local goondas.
This is not the first time they are doing this but now they have become more bolder because the Airport Authority and the Bajpe Police is not acting against this illegal and criminal activities.
Olacab will save not only money but also the import of fuel because the airport cab returns back to the airport empty (they claim?)
The youth of India brings new technology to make life easier.
Airport Arrival & Departure Driveway too are controlled by the Airport Taxi Assn. The Driveway is blocked between Departure & Arrival region and the place looks like a KSRTC Bus Depot.
Airport Authority should understand that the passengers are their customers and they generate revenue by passenger travel and how the Airport Authority allow the Airport Taxi Union to manhandle your customers (Passengers).
It is high time you show them the door and request them join Olacab chain.
This is the inefficiency of Bajpe Police and the DK police department is answerable to this jungle rule inside the M'lore International Airport.
The passengers should form M'lore Airport Passengers Assn. and protect our interest.

In many airports around the globe, there are airport taxis which have exclusive right to pick passengers arriving at the airport. Other regular taxis are not allowed. But in such airports such things are well planned in terms of design and supervision by competent authority. The general taxis are allowed pick outside the designated area little far from the airports. Everything is well planned and every one involved is well disciplined. But in our airports, nothing is planned and implemented. Everything is a mess giving scope to such goondaism. End of the day everything is managed by these blood sucking goons! @ India First,

Most of the taxi drivers in Mangalore Airport from chaddi group. They are standing in front of arrival gate with big naamas and saffron shawl with ugly face. They are not behaving politely as they are looking for customer. Better option is somebody come from your family/friends to pick you or send a known taxi to collect you from airport.

What did by Taxi Drivers..are absolutely right.
There is agreement in between Taxi Unions as well as Airport authorities..to pick up passengers thru themselves only.
No any private taxi will be entertained near the airport.
Poor Taxi Drivers..are waiting day long for arrival of flights..and pick up the passengers..on fixed rates.
Let women passenger and her husband understand the situation.
Reaction of Taxi drivers in this matter somewhat become harsh..according to there lifestyle.

If wants to knows more of it ..better approach Union Leader Taxi Union's Quadros Jr. in this matter in mumbai. Will brief in this matter in detail.

Without any reason nobody harass anybody. We are only good in writing lengthy comment.

India is a open market .. you can do your own business by paying tax to the government.. what the hell is this agreement?? They can register themselves ola or other online taxi service.. if they wish to earn there are many opportunities.. you cannot force passengers to take their(airport taxi drivers) burden of making easy money habit, laziness and lack of interest..

The taxi service monopoly (goondagiri) has been working at the Mangaluru airport for the last 3-4 decades.

I understand that they need to queue up for a long time, and may end up getting only three-four trips per day. And that their entire income for the day depends on these trips. There is a hardly any business for their services near the airport or Bajpe.

But for the travellers, this cartel makes life miserable. This should not be allowed!

Because the airport is a central government facility, the local police may have limited ability to the control the taxi cartel.

But there is a real need to break this monopoly, so that the travellers, both Indians and foreigners, can choose how they want to travel to/from the airport. The choice of the mode of travel should not be dictated by a cartel.

Citizens should have their own choice, these drivers are charging too much & they have made a chain link ( someone contact, someone s). This should be stopped & it's just a nuisance for the passengers, also Airport authority should get rid of all the labors who wait outside & create nuisance for the public by forcefully carrying, holding their luggage. Law and order has totally collapsed in Mangalore. Not only this incident, take any case and you will find that the public are totally at the mercy of these gangs or unions. These taxi drivers, rickshaw drivers, bus conductors behave as if they own the place and are a law unto themselves. It is next to impossible to argue with them and whatever they say or do is law. Their unions are so strong that the authorities are unable or unwilling to act against them. Worse is the case with the bus conductors. It is an open secret that the bus owners grease the palms of the police department which is why the police turn a blind eye to the atrocities of the bus staff. If at all any action is taken against any of these people, they turn to their political bosses who blindly support them with an eye on the votes. Nobody is bothered about the people and as a consequence law abiding common people suffer. If you have money, political connections and muscle power, you can get anything done in this country. If we carry on like this, I shudder to think what is going to overtake this country in the years to come. Sadly, I cannot see light at the end of the tunnel.

This happened to my brother in law 4 years before in mangalore airport. He was traveling from Abu Dhabi and met one of his close relative in the luggage area and they offered a to him to his house as no one came to pick him up and also his relatives has to cross his place to reach their destination. To his surprise when they reached reception area outside these goon taxi drivers grabbed his luggage trolley. When he said he is having his own transportation, they objected him stating that they did not come to pick you and you can't travel with them. They warned the driver of the car not to accommodate him. As usual no police official came to help from so called India's 2nd best customer support airport. By end he was forced to hire this goon taxi to reach his place by paying exorbitant fare. All they have internal links to transmit even the conversation between the passengers!!!!!

I had.. kind of similar incident.. when I was visiting to my home town in the year 1994, but I manage to battle with these frogs for their non-sense...

Just less than 2 yrs ago early 2014.. Spice Jet airlines staff gave me little hard time in Mangalore Airport at my last minutes to Mumbai flight… I not only thought lesson to that Managing Supervisor.. but also I got my extra money back what paid towards tkt from Airlines Authority from Delhi within 30 days along with apology letter with promise to take action against employee after I reached to US.

There are many people living in gulf and visiting frequently to Mangalore.. this is high time to write to proper authority to revoke their license.. after all.. passengers are the CITIZENS and they are the POWER for CHANGE..

Reason for this attitude is: Many people come for short stay and have NO time to take action against non-sense.. that gives them free hand and motivation for this kind of act..
