Major fire at automotive parts unit in Gurgaon

Gurgaon, June 15 (IANS): A major fire broke out in an automotive parts manufacturing factory here early on Monday, which 18 fire tenders took about 14 hours to douse.

A fire official said the blaze occurred due to an electrical short-circuit in the factory, which is located in Gurgaon's Industrial Model Township (IMT) Manesar. The entire first floor of the factory -- which housed machines and manufactured parts stores -- was gutted in the fire.

The blaze destroyed a major section of the ASK Automotive factory, located in a double-storey building in IMT Manesar's Sector 4. The value of the loss due to the fire could not be immediately assessed.

Fire tenders from all five fire brigade offices here along with private fire fighters from Maruti Suzuki and Honda factories were pressed into service to put out the blaze.

"Fire fighters worked hard for hours to control the blaze that broke out due to electrical short circuit around 1.00 a.m.," fire officer Isham Singh Kashyap told IANS.

"Fire officer Birbal Sharma received minor injuries. A team of fire fighters had a narrow escape when some paint containers exploded like bombs," Kashyap said.
