Udupi, Apr 26: Working president of Nagarjuna Virodha Horata Samiti Lakshman V Shetty has been arrested on Wednesday April 25 for allegedly assaulting Nagarjuna security staff Sudhir Amin and Walter.

Paudbidri police inspector Navinchandra Jogi who arrested Lakshman Shetty later produced him before magistrate.  Lakshman Shetty has been remanded to judicial custody will May 5.

It is said that Lakshman Shetty along with Nagesh Rao had illegally entered the Nagarjuna construction site to stop the company from digging a borewell. While they claimed that Nagarjuna was digging borewell in private land. (Some sources also claimed that the land where Nagarjuna is digging borewell is a land under dispute and High Court has ordered to maintain Status Quo there). 

This led to heated argument and even to assault.  At this point it is said that Lakshman Shetty forcibly opened a gate which hit Sudhir Amin and Walter and injured them. Following this, Sudhir filed a case with the Padubidri police who arrested Lakshman on Wednesday.

However, his arrest has sparked tension in the area.  Nandikur Janajagruti Samiti members, Nagarjuna Virodhi Samiti members and even the locals have condemned the arrest and accused police of high handedness.
