Encephalitis toll rises to 15 in Bihar


Patna June 17 (IANS): With the death of two more children due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in Muzaffarpur district on Wednesday, the toll has risen to 15 in Bihar, an official said.

The toll stood at 13 till Tuesday evening and the death of two children raised it to 15 on Wednesday, said Muzaffarpur civil surgeon Gyan Bhusan.

He said over three dozen children have been admitted to different hospitals with AES symptoms.

A severe case of encephalitis, AES is characterised by inflammation of the brain. Mosquitoes transmit the infection causing high fever.

Every year encephalitis hits Muzaffarpur and neighbouring districts in May or June.

Last year, a total of 149 children died due to AES in Muzaffarpur and its neighbouring districts.
