14 killed in Nigeria explosion

Abuja, June 17 (IANS): At least 14 people were killed and 48 others injured in Nigeria's northeastern state of Borno when an explosion hit members of a local security group tasked to protect civilians against attacks, a security source and local hospital confirmed to Xinhua news agency on Wednesday.

The incident occurred late Tuesday in Monguno town when members of the security group were on their way to deliver recovered explosive devices to the bomb disposal unit at a military base, said a senior army officer on condition of anonymity.

A senior official at the state-run Maiduguri General Hospital said the bodies of the 14 deceased were received early Wednesday.

"We are still treating 48 victims of the incident, some of whom are in terrible condition," added the source, who was not officially authorised to speak to media on the development.
