Rahul Gandhi again assures support to sanitation workers

New Delhi, June 17 (IANS): Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday assured Delhi's sanitation workers that he was with them in their struggle for all their demands and that he would support them to make the government pay their dues.

"We will get your demands fulfilled," he said addressing the sanitation workers here at Jantar Mantar, the hub for public protest.

Gandhi said he would always be there to support them.

He said he was speaking not only for sanitation workers but for all poor and weaker sections of the country.

"This isn't a speech for 'safai karamcharis' (sanitation workers) but for the weak, poor and underprivileged people of this nation," he said.

"Modi ji and Kejriwal ji think that change would come by making promises but we think it would come by standing with you," he said.

This was for the third time that Gandhi met the sanitation workers. Earlier, he met them at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi office at Patparganj in east Delhi.

The Delhi sanitation workers have been protesting against both the central and the Delhi governments for non-payment of their salaries for months together.

They even struck work for 12 days from June 1 which resulted in garbage turning into heaps in the city.
