Margao, Apr 28: Margao police on Friday morning arrested one Anand Kambli (27), hailing from Belgaum but recent resident of Mangalore, for allegedly killing UK-based NRI woman Denise Hegies (52) by slitting her throat with a knife.

According to superintendent of police (south Goa) Shekhar Prabhudesai, he was caught Friday morning on a tip-off from a rickshaw driver at Margao Konkan Railway station, when the accused was in the process of fleeing Goa by train.

For the last six months, the victim was staying in Swapna Harmony, Amrunagar-Margao, where the incident took place. Her family in UK has been informed about the killing.

Police sources said that the incident might have taken place late night of Thursday. When police got the information of the murder, they rushed to the spot and found the victim in a pool of blood, as her neck was slashed with a knife.

During the primary investigation, the accused has reportedly revealed that he used to come to the bungalow of the victim and she had a good rapport with him.

According to the police, the accused along with his wife and daughter had come to victim's place three days earlier. But after this act of crime, he stole an amount of  rupees five thousand and sent the family to Mangalore by cab in the wee hours of Friday. Later he himself went to the railway station to escape by train.

The police have traced fingerprints and other articles from the spot. The exact motive of the murder is not known, although the cash amount is missing. The postmortem report, which is expected on Saturday, will indicate the time of murder.
