47 Islamic nations join International Yoga Day

New Delhi, June 21 (IANS/IndiaSpend): There are 47 Islamic nations among the 177 countries of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) that officially co-sponsored with India a resolution to establish June 21 as "International Day of Yoga".

Yoga is a 5,000-year-old physical, mental and spiritual practice rooted in Hindu tradition, a religious origin that has caused disquiet among some Indian Muslim clerics.

This is the highest number of co-sponsors ever for any UN General Assembly resolution, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The resolution was passed unopposed without a vote.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promoted yoga as a means to project India's soft power. Some critics accuse him of subtly furthering a Hindu agenda, while some representatives of Indian Islamic organisations support Yoga Day, saying that namaz includes yogic postures.

Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Turkey, Iran, Indonesia, the UAE, Qatar and Oman were among the Islamic nations that co-sponsored the UN resolution.

Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Brunei, Mauritiana, Cameroon, Libya and Burkina Faso were among the eight members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) that did not co-sponsor the proposal for the Yoga Day.

The non-OIC members that did not co-sponsor the resolution were North Korea, Estonia, Namibia, Swaziland, Switzerland, Monaco, Solomon Islands and Zambia.

More than 35,000 people gathered at Rajpath in New Delhi to mark the Yoga Day - among them the prime minister, his cabinet ministers and diplomats.

In addition, more than 1.1 million National Cadet Corps cadets nationwide performed a "common yoga protocol", established by the ministry of ayurveda, yoga & naturopathy, unani, siddha and homeopathy (AYUSH). So, too, were about nine lakh policemen and women.

The word "Yoga" is derived from the Sanskrit root 'Yuj', meaning to join or to unite and dates back to 2,700 BC, and according to a government document, it is considered an "immortal cultural outcome" of the Indus-Saraswati Valley civilisation.

The government and yoga: close links

Yoga and naturopathy are widely promoted by the government of India, specifically by the AYUSH ministry.

There are two national institutes, the Morarji Desai National Institute for Yoga (MDNIY) in New Delhi and the National Institute for Naturopathy (NIN) in Pune, and one Central Council for Research in Yoga & Naturopathy (CCRYN), New Delhi. Granted Rs.101.5 crore over the last four years by the government, they hold exhibitions, seminars and conferences on yoga.

MDNIY recently started a B.Sc. in yoga science, and there are 18 colleges in eight states imparting a five-and-half-year Bachelor of Naturopathy & Yogic Sciences degree and more than 50 stand-alone yoga colleges offering B.Sc., M.Sc., diploma and certificate courses.

The government has also proposed an All-India Yoga Institute.

I saw several Muslims men and women in yoga practice today. An average Muslim doesn't care what bigots like Owaisi , buffoons like Lalu & others in the forum say...they don't care about religious mischiefs as long as it is of good for them.
The Govt should take this cue and extend its reach to Muslims...include them more in What they do and I am sure they will accept.

Sala or namaz five times a day makes a Muslim perfect spiritually healthy fit.Islam keeps open for any options except the concept of shirq or idol worship.Yoga can be used easily to dilute the concept of Thauheed or oneness of allah may be by introducing like suryanamaskar. This yoga day is just like Jana marulo jaatre marulo.

    Dear Vantage,
by the way you have mentioned the benefits of salat in your article here there should not have been any muslim terrorists. I have read that they also offer namaz five times.
it is not about what we do outwardly but cleanliness should begin from inside

For a real.muslim who practises salat 5 times a day he doesnt need any yoga...In between there are nawafil or optional prayers where one who wills can practise it to reach much closer to God which is highly recommended as most of muslims do it ....Five times of Islamic prayer is placed at 5 times of a day from pre dawn ,afternoon, early evening, dusk and night prayer....These prayers are clearly placed at different time to rejuvenate your connection with One God..and for a muslim it is compulsory to follow...
In 5 times we have totally 17 compulsory repitations of movements....If you add nawafil prayers its even more.....This is I am speaking of physical and spiritual form...Islam doesnt say practice salat for physical or spiritual benefits obviously it may be having ....But it says otherwise inorder your salat to be accepted you need to submit both physically and spiritually.....So that is why before performing salat it is obligatory for every muslim to do wudhu or ablution...that is purifying your body by water...In outer sense it means your getting clean of outward dirt...but in spiritual meaning your making sure you are cleaning your heart from all worldly desires to get ready for salat to submit to one lord....we dont believe we can get energy of God by doing some postures and reach Godly state...We believe God is one who is uncreated and no creation can be like him or reach his position...For a muslim we are advised to imitate prophets path which is ideal path advised by God..and try to become true God chosen human in spirit and action...If someone thinks he gets divine presence by doing yogic postures...he is approaching shirk or single unforgivable sin...and it doesnt matter whichever ethnicity he is from or whichever country or whichever name...in front of God he will be dealt same nor your hindu or arab or european ancestry matters

..I think the opposition for YOGA not because it threatens faith..its because of identity crisis, wrong information and there are chanels like PEAC# TV whIch further confuses..If there is confusion with word JEHAD/KUFR in people then no surprise with YOGA..

It like saying there is confusion in bhagwadgeetas message as both Gandhi and Godse are inspired by the same book but took different method in applying...

this only proves that YOGA is not against ISLAM or invokes any religion, as the Imams and Mullas of India, made it out to be!... The land of Islam origination, ARAB countires had no problem, which only proves that these dsigrnutled Imam, mullas and Nawabs who have nothing in common with the Arab world, have a hatred for their erstwhile religion- HINUDISM, and will condemn for the heck of it!...

India is the only country where these will advocate, YOGA HAS RELIGION and TERRORISM has NO RELIGION! vhe vhe vhe best lines were told by Baba Ramdev, muslamna ko bhi Bawaseer hoti hai, BP/Indigestion/Gas/Heart problem/respiratory problem hoti hai.. kyun na khule man se yoga ko try kare and see if it resolves any problems.. if not continue with praying to creator, to ease off your miseries! vhe vhe vhe
