Ahmedabad, May 3: Seeking intervention of the Supreme Court to safeguard freedom of the press, journalists from Gujarat have written a letter to the Chief Justice of India complaining against the ban on entry of media in the state police headquarters in Gandhinagar.

Journalists have appealed to the Supreme Court for "protection" of press freedom, stating that action on the part of Director General of Police P C Pande to ban journalists from entering Police Bhavan was wrong and unconstitutional.

The journalists said they were being prevented from doing their professional duties relating to the fake encounter case of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and murder of his wife Kausar Bi at the behest of three IPS officers.

"Given the sensitivities involved in the above mentioned case (Sohrabuddin), it seems that the patently wrong and unconstitutional action on part of the Gujarat DGP is solely aimed at suppressing truth from coming out in full public view. It is our plea, your honour, that the journalists of Gujarat, and the more important press freedom, gets your protection," the letter said.
