Parl panel wants 100% salary hike, more free travel, other perks for MPs

New Delhi, Jul 2 (PTI): A parliamentary panel has pitched for 100 percent hike in salary and daily allowances of MPs and 75 percent raise in pension of ex-MPs apart from facilities for their "companions" in place of "spouses".

In far-reaching recommendations, the panel, headed BJP MP Yogi Adityanath, has sought doubling of the existing Rs 50,000 salary of MPs and favoured increasing the pension of former parliamentarians from Rs 20,000 to Rs 35 thousand.
The panel has also recommended that the daily allowance of MPs of Rs 2,000 for attending the House during Parliament sessions should be doubled to Rs 4000.

It is learnt that some ex-MPs, who appeared before the panel rued that while they are given a First Class Ticket to travel on train, their companions, even if it is the spouse, can travel only second class.

The panel is learnt to have recommended that both the ex- MP and the "companion" should get First Class tickets.

Besides, the panel is of the view that ex-MPs should be allowed to travel by air five times a year in economy class. The sitting MPs are allowed to fly executive class around three dozen times in a year.

The panel also noted that since MPs are considered above the rank of Cabinet Secretary, their privileges should also match their status. It also pitched for health care benefits to married children of MPs.

Sources said some of these recommendations recorded in the minutes of the meeting of the committee have already been submitted to Parliamentary Affairs Ministry, while some others will be finalised in the next meeting on July 13.

The salaries and perks of the MPs were last revised in 2010. Once the current panel submits its recommendations, the next revision will be carried out after another five years.

CPI-M's member K N Balagopal has, however, suggested that MPs themselves should not decide their salary and allowances and that should be done through an independent mechanism.

JD-U, which is represented on the panel by Rajya Sabha MP K C Tyagi, is also of the view that an independent body should be constituted to decide the salary and perks of MPs keeping in mind the benefits announced by various boards and commissions appointed for revision of wages.

Some members of the panel contended since India is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the salary and allowances of its MPs should be at par with their counterparts in the member countries.

It's shameful/disgusting for our MPs to expect a 100% salary hike, at a time when our farmers committing suicide due to the failed rural economy!

Instead, they should donate a part of their (legal & illegal) earnings for sustaining the poorest farmers and thereby, preventing further suicides by these farmers. This is the least these 'servants of the people' could do, for being elected to power.

WHY only 100% ask 1000% !! you've successfully divided this nation on this party or that,or religion.so people supporting ruling party always with you no matter how deeply you guys stab us.
DIDN'T MP's told us they are our servants? PM himself told he is 'pradan sevak'.(& spent 400crore on foreign trips!)so how can a servant increase his salary without my(our) permission?!
IS'nt attending parliament is MP's primary duty?why he should get 'allowance' for doing his duty!!
IF an MP fails to deliver his promises will he return my(our) money back?
WHY this MP given pension?what he did to deserve our continued monetary support.for how long we should bear the cost of these parasites.
THIS govt does not've time or money for suiciding farmers or the soldiers demanding respectable pension.
BUT has panel filled with greedy/selfish MP's who've power to decide their own salary!!!
IT cant go more ridiculous than this.
NOW you know why people stack black money in distant swiss a/c. it really hurts when your hard earned money squeezed by govt & then in utter disrespect it squanders all that on greedy MP's.

Shameless breed of politicians who never think or do anything for the country or fellow countrymen. Not one of them wants to improve the living condition of poor, education for the underprivileged or betterment of the country. At this rate the country will never improve and more and more people would prefer to migrate to foreign countries who at least use the tax payers' money for giving better facilities for their citizens. we are the lesser fortunate people to be born here and ruled by this kind of politicians. Hope good sense prevails over the PM Modi otherwise he will also lose his credibility sooner than later.

People in public life should live a modest life and inspire others.
When scores of farmers die due to stress of debt,
30% people of India are below poverty line,
It is shameless to ask for additional facilities by so called servants of people.
Whom are they serving? self serving or people whom they represent?
An attitude of sacrifice is essential for public servants!

MP and MLA should have better remunerations to attract fitting personalities to the post. If they are not getting proper benefits, that position which is highest in a democratic set up will not interest the proper persons and the country will go to cat and dogs.

These people think that being in the parliament they are doing a favour with the general public. Attending parliament session is part of their duty, why do they paid extra for that. and 48 times first class air ticket, does the parliament goes so long? Let the loot the country and the public will sit and watch. but they they will all forget this loot when a bottle of liquor and given and told to spread communal unrest. Mera Bharat Mahan.

I would like to quote the following :

Some members of the panel contended since India is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the salary and allowances of its MPs should be at par with their counterparts in the member countries.

    Unquote .

I think our stupid MPs deserve even more :

Since India is also a member of UN, these goonies must be paid same way as their counterparts in UK, US, Germany and other rich member countries as well.

85 % subsidy on Chicken, mutton dishes must be increased to 98 % at the Parliament Canteen, further MPs dogs and other pets also must be covered along with them.

Paan, Gutka, liquor also must be made available at the canteen in the same way.

MPs like Nalin who never open their mouth, and also snore during the parliamentary sessions must get additional allowance of Rs.200 per hour and a national award be given to MPs, who earn the highest allowances, and celebrate the event for one month in the MPs constituency at tax payer's expenses.
