Ban condemns attack against peacekeepers in Mali

United Nations, Jul 3 (IANS): UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon has condemned the attack against a convoy of the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali, MINUSMA, which killed six peacekeepers and injured five others.

The peacekeepers were killed by militants in Mali's restive northern region when a UN convoy was ambushed on Thursday morning near the city of Timbuktu, Xinhua reported.

"The Secretary-General reminds all parties that attacks against UN peacekeepers constitute a serious violation of international law and urges all those responsible to be brought swiftly to justice," said UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq in a daily briefing on Thursday.

The attack was one of the deadliest for the UN peacekeepers in Mali. More than 40 peacekeepers have been killed since MINUSMA was established in 2013, according to UN figures.
