Mangalore, May 9: Red Cross Day was celebrated in a special way in the city on Tuesday May 8 in D C Office Conference Hall here.
The celebrations were inaugurated by N G Mohan, former secretary of Dakshina Kannada Red Cross Society.
In his address he commended the efforts of Red Cross Society towards the upliftment and welfare of the world especially in times of natural calamities, famine, drought etc. He also emphasized that members need to be ever alert in reaching out to people whenever they need them.
Lamenting over the attendance of members for the celebrations he said that members should take it as their duty to serve people. “We have so many members in the society here in DK. But only a few have come here for the celebration. It shows that there are lot things which have to be put in right perspective,” he added.
Red Cross Society in DK district was re-started in the year 1997. Eversince it has rendered memorable service to the district especially during infamous Suratkal Riots and also during the landslide at Kethikal near Vamanjoor.
“We have been reaching out to people in our own ways. But at times we have not been able to embrace all through our service. For example we had decided to start a Highway Trauma Centre to accommodate to the needs of accidents in highways. Though the Society made an effort to raise Rs 23 lac, the centre could not be materialized,” he informed.
Dr B Ramachandra Bhat said that junior Red Cross Society should be started in every school in Dakshina Kannada. The ideals and principles of Red Cross Society and its founder Henry Dunant should be inculcated in the students, said he.
