Over 30 killed in Nigeria attacks


Lagos, July 6 (IANS): More than 30 people have been confirmed dead following fresh attacks by unidentified gunmen in Birnin-Magaji area of northwest Nigeria's Zamfara state, officials and police said.

Muhammad Gusami, the local government chairman, who confirmed the incident on Sunday to reporters in Gusua, the state capital, said the attacks took place in Kokeya and Chigama villages, Xinhua news agency reported.

Gusami said the gunmen on motorcycles invaded Kokeya village and killed two people, set some houses ablaze and carted away animals, mostly cows.

The attackers again returned and invaded the neighbouring village of Chigama, killing more than 30 people whose bodies were still being recovered from the bush.

The chairman said the bodies have been taken to Birnin-Magaji General Hospital.

Similarly, state police spokesperson Sanusi Amiru said the army and police have moved to the area and normalcy has been restored.
