Spanish woman arrested for funneling girls to IS

Madrid, July 7 (IANS): A woman was arrested on Tuesday in Lanzarote in the Spanish Canary Islands for allegedly recruiting and sending girls to areas controlled by Islamic State (IS), according to the Spain's interior ministry.

Officials from the ministry told Efe news agency that the Spanish woman maintained direct contact with the jihadi organisation in Syria.

More than 40 people have been arrested in Spain so far this year for allegedly cooperating with IS.

Yet, this was the first arrest in the Canary Islands, as most arrests of this nature in Spain have been in Catalonia, and Spanish exclaves on the African continent Ceuta and Melilla.

Spanish Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz said on Sunday that jihadi threats were at a peak, noting that 116 Spaniards have joined the IS or Al Qaeda, a low figure compared to other European countries such as France.
