Mangalore, May 12: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), New Delhi, has taken note of the alleged killings due to police firing in Mangalore on December 1 last year and has given a notice to the Director-General of Police in Bangalore directing him to submit a report within four weeks after he gets the notice.

The Dakshina Kannada unit of the People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) had filed a complaint about the alleged killings of two youths, Dinesh Amin and Premnath Kotian, in the police firing at Mulky. The incident took place when the body of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker Sukhananda Shetty was being taken in a procession on December 1.

The NHRC notice to the Karnataka Director-General of Police, which is available with The Hindu here, asks him to submit a report on the incident. The notice said, "Take further notice that in default the commission may proceed to take such action as it deems proper." The notice, number 13/10/2007-2008/UC, is also available with the Dakshina Kannada unit of PUCL.
