Five of family killed in Syria rocket attack

Beirut, July 8 (IANS/EFE): Five members of a family were killed when a rocket crashed into their home in the northeastern Syrian province of Deir al-Zour, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said on Wednesday.

According to SOHR, the couple and their three children were killed early on Wednesday after Syrian forces fired rockets into the area.

The London-based NGO explained that the attack also wounded an undetermined number of people.

A part of Deir al-Zour is under the control of the government, while the other was seized by the Islamic State (IS).

Over the past few hours, fighting between the two sides has intensified near the city's military airport, currently controlled by regime forces under President Bashar al-Assad.

The IS has taken control of large parts of Syria and Iraq since June 2014, when it proclaimed a “caliphate” in all the lands under its dominion.
