Colombia rejects guerrilla leader's extradition to US

Bogota, Jul 10 (IANS): The Colombian government has refused to extradite a guerrilla leader of the armed National Liberation Army (ELN) group to the US, the media reported on Friday.

President Juan Manuel Santos on Thursday signed a resolution after the Supreme Court denied the extradition of Wigberto Tomas Chamorro, alias Jairo, who was captured last year and charged with kidnapping an American citizen, Xinhua news agency reported.

The extradition request was made in 2007 by a US district court on charges of kidnapping and helping facilitate crimes.

The ELN is the second largest armed group in Colombia after the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
