Passenger falls ill on Delhi-Mumbai flight, dies

Mumbai/New Delhi, July 11 (IANS): An Air India flight from New Delhi to Mumbai had to push back from the runway after a passenger suddenly reported sick on Saturday morning. He was taken to a hospital but died on the way.

As the passenger fell ill, a co-passenger immediately informed the crew members, and the pilot decided to turn back from the runway shortly before take-off around 10 a.m., an Air India official said in Mumbai.

The Delhi-Mumbai flight AI 887 returned to the terminal where the sick passenger was handed over to the airport doctors for urgent medical attention.

The doctors recommended further tests for the passenger in a hospital, but he is reported to have died en route.

The details of the passenger -- age, illness and whether he was from Delhi or some other city -- were not immediately known.

The scheduled flight later took off around 11.40 a.m. for Mumbai.
