Rape case lodged against IPS, day after he files complaint against Mulayam

Lucknow, July 12 (Agencies): An FIR has been registered against IPS officer Amitabh Thakur under rape charges in Gomti Nagar police station of Lucknow (UP) on Sunday a day after he filed a complaint with the police against Mulayam Singh Yadav, alleging that the Samajwadi Party chief threatened him with dire consequences if he does not mend his ways.
While Mulayam was not immediately available for comments, an SP leader dismissed the charge.

According to the wife of IPS officer Amitabh Thakur, the provocation behind the threat could have been the FIR lodged by her against state Mining minister Gayatri Prajapati. Thakur, who has been assisting his wife and RTI activist Nutan Thakur in raising social issues, released an audio tape on Friday purportedly containing the voice of the SP chief.

"I consider this as return gift from Mulayam Singh Yadav as I dared to make his threats public," said Amitabh Thakur on the FIR registered against him. "We do welcome this FIR, I’m sure justice will be done, will move HC demanding CBI probe into this."

"I felt I should take a stand. Therefore, I gave a complaint against SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav," Thakur, IG Civil Defence said.

"At around 4.45 pm, a phone came from Mulayam Singh's residence and he talked to me. He told me that whatever had happened in Jasrana, Firozabad, where I had been assaulted by one of his relative and an MLA in 2006, much harsher things will happen to me if I don't 'mend my ways'," Thakur said on Friday.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Lucknow, Rajesh Pandey said the matter will be probed to find out the genuineness of the audio tape released by Thakur.

Nutan, who is an RTI activist, claimed that when her husband went to Hazratganj police station to lodge an FIR, SHO Vijaymal Yadav refused him. But, on the IPS officer's insistence, he received a copy of the complaint and said the matter will be inquired.

Refuting the allegation, SP leader CP Rai said, "I have not heard the audio but such an allegation appears to be doctored. He (Mulayam) is such a senior leader. I know him for past 30 years... He can never threaten anyone."

"Since we've made public Mulayamji's threats, don't know how many more cases will be registered against me and my husband (Amitabh Thakur). Both FIRs should be thoroughly investigated, the one registered by us & the one registered by that woman," said Nutan Thakur.
