Top UN envoy meets Afghan chief officer

Kabul, Jul 13 (IANS): UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) head, Nicholas Haysom met the country's Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah to discuss about the present security situation of the South Asian nation.

Both met in Kabul on Sunday, Xinhua news agency reported on Monday.

"The two sides exchanged views on general security situation. Abdullah also expressed his view about his latest trips to northern and southern provinces and provided Haysom the information about security situation there," an official statement said.

The UN official welcomed the direct talks held between Afghan government and Taliban representatives in Islamabad, last week, saying that the UNAMA supports the latest peace negotiations and it urges the parties to take the next steps towards a reconciliation and peace process.

Haysom also urged the Afghan government to speed up reform process in election law and elections commissions.

Afghanistan's third parliamentary elections were expected to be held earlier this year. But the process has been delayed.
