Mullah Omar hails Afghan peace talks

Kabul, July 15 (IANS): Taliban leader Mullah Omar on Wednesday endorsed the reconciliation process aimed at ending the dragging insurgency in Afghanistan, a media report said.

Afghan officials met Taliban representatives last week at Murree in Pakistan in talks brokered by Islamabad.

"Concurrently with armed jihad, political endeavours and peaceful pathways for achieving these sacred goals was a legitimate Islamic principle," Khaama Press quoted Omar as saying in a message to mark Eid.

The Wednesday statement marks the first comments on the peace process from elusive Mullah Omar.
