Nine killed in Philippines coal mine collapse


Manila, July 17 (IANS): At least nine people were killed on Friday in a coal mine collapse in Philippines' Antique province, officials said.

According to the energy department, initial investigation revealed that the accident took place at 3:30 a.m. at the north edge of the Panian Mine site, Xinhua news agency reported.

Rosario Cabrera, director of the Regional Office of Civil Defence, said a portion of the mining site collapsed following a landslide.

She said there were 13 workers at the site when the landslide occurred and four of them were able to escape.
