Compulsory yoga for CBSE students of Classes XI, XII

New Delhi, Jul 22, (PTI) Yoga has been made compulsory in CBSE curricula for Classes XI and XII while for students of other classes it should be held "at least" twice a week as part of their physical activity programme, the government today said.

Informing this in a written reply in Rajya Sabha, AYUSH Minister Shripad Yasso Naik said yoga education has also been made a compulsory part of study and practice by National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).

"The HRD Ministry has further informed that there are 15,962 schools affiliated to the CBSE who have already been advised to provide compulsory 40-45 minutes of physical activities or games to the students of Classes I-X every day...

"...and that students of Classes XI-XII should participate in physical activity/ games/mass physical training/yoga for at least two periods per week (90-120 minutes/ week). The board offers physical and health education for classes XI and XII and yoga is compulsory part of its curriculum," Naik said.

Naik said NCTE has already developed modules on yoga education for diploma in elementary education and master of education.

"These will be used by more than 18,000 teacher education institutions and also 14 lakh student – teachers and teacher educators who are studying or teaching in these institutions," Naik said.

The Minister said that HRD Ministry has informed that the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2005 which is a policy document for the country, recommended Yoga as an integral part of health and physical education.

He said that the government has laid down the national policy on Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy-2002 which envisages overall growth and development of Yoga.

The Government has formulated the programmes and operational measures for promotion of yoga through centrally sponsored scheme of National AYUSH Mission (NAM) and various central sector schemes.

"Further, a task force has been constituted by the Ministry to deliberate and make recommendations on various important issues concerning the AYUSH Ministry, including the preferred option for promotion, development and regulation of Yoga and Naturopathy for education and practice," Naik said.

"Everything should be left to the choice of students. To do Yoga or Not to do."
    - Do what you will is the way of Satan
    - Christian parents are to bring up their children in the discipline and correction of the Lord and not the ways of Satan
    - Yoga relies on uniting the individual with the divine within oneself as well as uniting with all of creation - This is Pantheism.
    - Christianity believes that God is distinct in reality and essence from His creation. Pantheism on the other hand teaches God and the universe are one.
    - If spiritual discipline is needed, teach your children the Spiritual Exercises St. Ignatius of Loyola
    - The priests who practise and teach Yoga are leading the laity astray as Jesus warned

Compulsory yoga class in the school is a violation of fundamental rights. Is it compulsory at the Parliament?

This is a very clear-cut sign of Modiji's drive towards an autocracy, the systematic strategy of the tightlipped PM towards his ultimate goal to be an autocrat, step by step. India is heading towards a very troubled march.

If I'm not mistaken, screening of Modi's speech in schools on the eve of Teacher's day was also made mandatory and now this yoga. I'm not debating about the merits of yoga nor about the impact that Modi's vocal prowess might have had had on the minds of our generation next. The point is how prudent it is to impose ideas stemming from someone's whims and fancies on others? It's like making Vedic math mandatory. Vedic math might be having many advantages, but for someone with zero affection for numbers it could be nightmarish. If a certain thing is good and beneficial, it'll automatically attract people. Good wine needs no bush!

It is good for health but Compulsion is not good and it is against the freedom of choice. Only Yoga wont help. There are so many other physical fit nesses like gymnastics, body building and fitness classes which is by choice by the individual. The same way yoga should be rather than compulsory. Its only important to bring awareness among students to know the importance of healthy life style and yoga and not compulsory.

CBSE is not authorized to go beyond its purpose: designing a syllabus, and helping the schools n implementing the syllabus.

Recently it came up with the dress code for the exams. The Kerala High Court threw out the dress code after a couple of students challenged it.

For this "compulsory" yoga too, all that a few students need to do is take the matter to the high court. It is sure to be thrown out.

PS: I strongly believe that Yoga has benefits. But making anything and everything compulsory goes against the basic tenets of human rights.

How long yoga has been practiced?

Yoga as we know it today a set of postures (asanas) combined with breathing techniques dates back to around the grand old year of 1960.

"But how can that be?" you scream, rending your organic exercise mat in two. Well, that "five thousand years old" claim rests entirely on some 5,000-year-old pictures found in the Indus Valley of a man sitting cross-legged. Though this is one of the main yoga positions, it so happens that it's also the position most people take when, you know, they sit on any flat surface.

Yoga is first mentioned by name in some 2,500-year-old Hindu religious texts called the Upanishads, but this is actually a term relating to a method of strapping horses together literally the origin for our word "yoke." The Upanishads use it as a metaphor for a mental prayer technique, but as far as all those weird stretches are concerned, the texts mention exactly one physical posture, and that posture is pretty much "sit in a way that makes meditation comfortable." So the word "yoga" might describe an old Hindu teaching, but then so does the word "avatar," and nobody's claiming that the James Cameron movie reflects an unbroken line of ancient sacred tradition.

It wasn't until the 19th century that an Indian prince named Krishnaraja Wodeyar III produced something resembling what we call yoga: a manual called the Sritattvanidhi, which listed 122 poses mostly taken from Indian gymnastics. What really kicked-started modern yoga, though, was the influence of the Imperial British, who introduced Indians to the new exercise craze that was sweeping Europe at the time.

Later a guy named B.K.S. Iyengar came up with the idea of combining these exercise techniques with some of the teachings described in old Hindu texts like the Yoga Sutras and let the result loose on America in the 1960s. Since then, yoga fans have grown by the millions, with few realizing that they are practicing a chanted-up version of early 20th-century gym

very good move! there is a need of skilled yoga teachers in future, who know authentic yoga.. we can export these teachers abroad to fill the gap. even if 10% of students in these CBSE schools, who score less marks in future, there is a avenue to build a career around this yoga skill!... kudos.. this will look forcible to many, but if we had this kind of help during our days, we could have found alternative careers!... see, for example Anushka shetty, who acted in Baahubali. she was a yoga instructor with bharat thakur and caught someones eyes while doing yoga, and went on to become succesfull actor in south industry... you never know. be positive! if elders ask you to follow something, it is for your own good. let seculars and peacefuls oppose it and stay out of it! every hindu kid should go thorugh this exercise..

Yoga is good, but leave the option open.
Compelling will create doubts in the minds on Yoga's claimed credentials and on the intentions of its imposers.

One more burden on those poor students who are, after the school hours at home go to bring drinking water from away, to bring ration from store, to assist family in agriculture field.
The yoga should be recommended for those students who have no work in home.
