Jul 23 (Mumbai Mirror): The Enforcement Directorate (Mumbai zonal unit) attached several properties worth approximately Rs 56 crore belonging to suspended deputy collector of MHADA Nitish Thakur on Wednesday. This is the second set of Thakur's properties attached in the past year.
The properties attached on Wednesday include huge tracts of land and a hotel called Shareline, both in Thane, and four flats and seven shops in Alibaug.
ED first swung into action in 2012 following a Rs 12 crore transaction from Dubai involving Thakur, which prompted the agency to conduct an investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act that has now resulted in the attachment of properties worth over Rs 100 crore.
Thakur was arrested by Anti Corruption Bureau in 2012 for possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. He was then said to have amassed assets worth Rs 118 crore. An ED officer said, "So far we have attached Thakur's properties, bank accounts, fixed deposits, car and other valuables totalling Rs 113 crore. Last year ED had attached properties worth Rs 57crore."
During investigations ED learnt that Thakur received around Rs 12 crore from Dubai, for which he failed to provide any satisfactory explanation. The probe revealed that the money was part of a kickback which Thakur received for allegedly helping developers to clear their projects when he was posted in Slum Rehabilitation Authority. It was found that a real estate firm paid Rs 141.50 crore to PRS Enterprises, owned by Thakur's brother to buy 900 acres of land, but instead the Thakurs procured the land for themselves at Alibaug, Murud, Srivadhan, Pune and other parts of Raigad District.
Apart from the Konkan belt, the Thakurs have a flat and an office in Kandivali, a huge bungalow in Gorai, a duplex flat in Vile Parle and four flats in Andheri, besides 10 high-end imported vehicles.
ED believes the Thakurs still possessing properties and valuables worth over Rs 100 crore. An ED source said, "Thakur was a government servant and his lifestyle and properties is a clear indication of receiving kickbacks while clearing projects in Mumbai and neighbouring areas."
