UAE foundation donates to help refugees

Abu Dhabi, July 26 (IANS/WAM): The Big Heart Foundation (TBHF) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has pledged seven million dirhams (about $1 million) to help refugees in crisis, media reported on Sunday.

According to the foundation, the donation will fund three projects run by the UN refugee agency UNHCR.

Of the total pledged, five million dirhams will be used to fund healthcare services for Syrian refugees in Jordan's Zaatari Camp, and one million dirhams will be disbursed to Syrian refugees in vulnerable situations as assessed by the UNHCR.

The remaining one million dirhams will go to support the work of the UNHCR in Indonesia where thousands of Rohingya Muslims are fleeing persecution and risking their lives on sea vessels or at the hands of human traffickers.

Since its inception, TBHF has provided life-saving medical services to over 365,000 Syrian refugees and has provided over 400,000 others vital food and financial aid.
