Fire in Kolkata's heritage New Market

Kolkata, Jul 31 (IANS): A fire broke out in the 138-year-old historic New Market in the heart of Kolkata on Thursday night, police said. There were no reports of any casualty.

Ten fire tenders rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control after fighting the flames for over an hour, police said.

The flower section inside the market's old complex caught fire around 9 p.m., said an officer manning the city police control room.

This was the third fire incident in four months in the municipal market, the oldest in the city.

The Gothic architecture market complex was built by the then British rulers in 1873 to cater to their needs. Till some time back, the New Market - also called Hogg Market after then Calcutta Municipal Corporation chairman Sir Stewart Hogg - was the haunt of all fashionable Kolkatans. It is a heritage structure.
