Mangaluru, Aug 8: Passengers apprehended a woman trying to snatch a gold chain from a child's neck in the bus and handed her over to Mulky station police on Friday August 7.
Surathkal resident Chitra was returning with her child Datri and other family members in a Sarvani Travels bus plying to Mangaluru via Kinnigoli after visiting Kateel temple. The people travelling with Chitra saw a woman in the bus trying to pull the chain from the child’s neck and informed bus conductor Diwaker Shetty. The woman is thought to be from Tamil Nadu.
The bus conductor and the passengers made the woman alight at Kinnigoli bus stand and informed local people about it. Kinnigoli panchayat member Sunitha Zita Rodrigues immediately informed Mulky police. The police arrived, arrested the woman, and are conducting an investigation.
“The buses plying from Kateel are crowded on Fridays and other days of religious importance and thieves are making use of this opportunity. Such incidents are common and five such incidents have occurred when I was on duty,” said conductor Shetty.
An incident where a woman’s chain was snatched by two men on a motorbike who pretended to seek directions in Guthakadu near Kinnigoli on Thursday August 6 was another recent such incident. The men had fled on their bike.
