Puttur: Jeep-tanker accident on Shiradi Ghat - Two women killed

Puttur, Aug 10: Two women were killed in an accident between a jeep and a tanker near Addahole on Shiradi Ghat here on Monday August 10.

The deceased have been identified as Rukmini (35), wife of Perje resident Vishwanath, and Bhavani (40), wife of the late Guddappa. They were relatives.

Kokkrady resident Chandrashekar who was driving the jeep, a nun identified as Sr Nisha and another lady named Lilly were injured and shifted to a hospital in Mangaluru. Another injured, Vishwanath, was taken to Uppinangady general hospital.

The accident took place when a tanker moving from Bengaluru to Mangaluru rammed into the jeep. The occupants of the jeep were going towards Sakleshpur.

The accident occured on a day when Shiradi Ghat opened for traffic after several months of concreting work. However, the accident did not take place on the newly-concreted stretch but a little distance away, it is learnt.

Puttur traffic police have registered a case.

    With concreted road, the drivers are taking liberty to go beyond safe speed limit and endanger others’ lives. Good roads required but good sense also should prevail in the minds of one who is on the wheels to drive safely and reach the destination safe.

    So sad indeed and my heartfelt sympathies with the families who lost their dear family members and also whish a quick recovery for those who injured.

    Look at the tanker and its position on the road immediately after a turn. Can anyone imagine how the jeep or any other vehicles pass through this situation safely? I noticed another thing on the tanker windscreen “EMERGENCY ON AIRPORT DUTY”! Really surprising and I think this was installed when on emergency duty and still on the tanker…, for what?

    Dear all, please be careful while driving and it is not only we have to be driving safe but also we need to take care of others who are on the road who may not be driving or using the road so safely!

    I remember when we installed a new electric pumpset at my house, on the first day my father along with the electrical supervisor cut a cock and shed the blood throught the pump and motor. I asked why it is done so. My father told me it is an indian tradition inorder to avoid accident.
    so please before starting this road cut one sheep and allow its blood to flow, so that this roadwill never drink blood of humans.

    John, What a shame , living in medieval times . such a cock & bull story . gullible fools like you make it easier for preachers, Babas, Peer syed sahibs, Hugging saints ,smiling saints, Moun (silent) saints etc to spring up by a dime a dozen. Overnight these Babas become millionaires. Our Earstwhile Congress minister (R.Gundu. Rao) had invoked the blessings of God for rains. Millions of hard earned tax money was used for yagnas to appease the Rain God & then nothing happened for a while , Afterwards it rained & there were floods.I am sure another yajna was done to stop the Rain God from being over generous. What nonsense. Our investment in the Almighty sector is second to none. Indias biggest folly. Which is why we shall all be doomed till this foolishness comes to a full stop. Believe me, no progress is possible till we are united & take this head on .

    This is indeed sad. At a time when the fresh route has just opened and there is so much excitement about taking the fresh journey on the new road, this accident has occurred. Without going into the details it is a warning to every one that however good the road may be, one has to observe the traffic regulations to the word and not make an attempt to drive fast exceeding the prescribed speed limits.

    Road accidents are on the increase. Hope better discretion prevails and all commuters observe every traffic rule to the word.

    I join several others i offering sincere sympathies to the members of the deceased families.

    I am very sorry to see this news about the accident, immediately after the road re-opened. The unidentified nun is our beloved, Superior from our Convent in Adhole. We pray for her speedy recovery!
    Our heart-felt condolences to the families of the deceased.And pray for all the injured.
    I do hope at least now the authorities will do something about the OVER SPEEDING VEHICLES on that road.The killer-Tankers are a real nightmare for all!
