Mangaluru, Aug 10: Vice-chancellor of Mangalore University Prof K Byrappa on Monday August 10 launched a logo to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. The logo was released at Syndicate Hall of Mangalore University at Konaje here, months ahead of the anniversary celebrations.
Addressing the gathering, Prof Byrappa said, "Earlier, former higher education minister R V Deshpande had suggested that Jawaharlal Nehru’s 125th birth anniversary should be observed in all universities. In fact, the birthdays of all freedom fighters should be observed so that the future generations are aware of their great lives. In view of his suggestions, we will be celebrating Nehru’s birth anniversary in a grand manner, so that it will be a role model for other universities in India."
He also informed that the state government has sanctioned a sum of Rs 3 crore for Nehru Chintana Kendra which he said would keep alive the ideologies propounded by Nehru.
Dr Rajaram Tholpady, said, "From the past few months, we are designing programmes on the lines of Nehruvian thought under the able guidance of the vice-chancellor. There will be various competitions marking the anniversary celebrations. There will also be a children’s convention on November 14. A training camp on political leadership on Nehruvian democratic concept will be held from November 20 to 26. Former union minister Manish Tiwari will take part in the convention.
"The Centre for Nehruvian Thought (Nehru Chintana Kendra) has already got university grant. A three-day international scholars’ meet on Nehruvian thoughts, on the theme 'Rediscovering Nehru's ideas in contemporary India' will be held. When the proposal for the international workshop was submitted to former higher education minister R V Deshpande, he had asked us to form the Nehru Chintana Kendra, and we submitted the proposal to the government accordingly and recently it was approved. Renowned scholars will deliver lectures on various themes during the workshop," he explained.
Further speaking about the programme, he informed that there will be film screening and book exhibition for children on Jawaharlal Nehru as well.
Professor P L Dharma welcomed the gathering and said, "We are launching the logo to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. There will be an international workshop to commemorate the birth anniversary of Nehru. A quiz competition will be organized for children on November 14, and also a children's convention, where 5,000 students are expected to participate. Further, there will be a film festival in the third week of November for children."
Syndicate member P V Mohan, registrar Palale Subrahmanya Yadapadithaya and others were present.
