Diamond trading firm accused of supplying fake stones, faces action

Aug 11 (Mumbai Mirror): VSM Diamonds, a city-based diamond trading company has landed in trouble after the diamonds that they provided to a showroom in Bandra were found to be synthetic. It all started when the Bandra showroom wrote to the Gemological Institute of India (GII) as they suspected the diamonds they had received from VSM traders was synthetic.

The GII formed a nine-member committee consisting of the Bharat Diamond Company, Mumbai Diamond Association, Diamond Merchant Export Promotion Council and some independent members to investigate the.

After scrutiny of the diamonds in the GII laboratory, the committee found that the diamonds were indeed synthetic and were made by using carbon as a pressing agent to make them look more real.

Despite a written notice being given to VSM traders, a similar case was reported when they supplied synthetic diamonds again to the same Bandra showroom. Following this, Bharat Diamond Company has cancelled VSM's trading card.

The trading company has moved the high court after having filed a Rs 500-crore defamation suit against Bharat Diamonds.

Merchants told Mirror that this is the first case in the city where synthetic diamonds were found and immediate action was taken in the matter.
