Udupi, Aug 11: An interaction programme with Nadoja Dr S R Nayak, former chief justice, was held at Poornaprajna College, Udupi, at the college auditorium on Monday August 10.
The programme was organized by Human Rights Federation of India (HRFI) under the aegis of Rotary Ambalpady.
Dr Nayak said, “The very need of human rights in democracy is to create responsible and committed citizens. Nowadays our democratic system has been weakening due to lack of awareness about human rights. My goal is to exhort children, not senior citizens, to bring changes in society.”
He further said, “A person should follow and abide by the laws. Fundamental rights are part and parcel of human rights. Human rights represent an attempt to protect individuals from oppression, exploitation, and injustices. Human rights generally mean that a common man needs the right to lead a peaceful, respectful and happy life in society. Out of this, three more requirements are education, training and employment (social service). Equality is the soul of human rights.”
“There is no protection for humans in the world. The central government is spending finances in the name of security measures. Our nation is facing insecurity due to lack of ‘Vishwamanava’. The Government of India is unable to fulfill the reservation seats in every sector due to poor encouragement and support from the community. Reservation meant for groups is not in favour of an individual,” added Dr Nayak.
He stressed that women’s development is possible only when she gets sufficient time to hone her knowledge. “Her development is not achieved by shouting for her rights. Caste is another challenge before our society. We cannot remove caste from the society, but we can keep equality in caste. Each child wants to become a ‘Vishwamanava’ from the womb and youth should be committed to make this a reality,” said Dr Nayak.
Poornima Shetty, president of HRFI, Dr B Jagadeesh Shetty, college principal, Alan V Lewis, assistant governor, Rotary Zone 2, R G 3180, Devidas V Shettigar, president, Rotary Ambalpady, and Dinesh Bhat were present.
