Mangaluru, Aug 14: About a thousand students from schools and colleges functioning under Saraswat Education Society here will be forming a human chain in the central part of the city on Saturday August 15 to spread out a National Flag that is 305 metres long.
The flag, prepared by a Hyderabad-based company, will be unveiled by Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner, A B Ibrahim at Ganapati school premises.
The flag will then be held high by the students of Ganapati English Medium School, Ganapati Aided Primary School, Ganapati High School, Ganapati PU College, Parijnana PU College and Anandashram School from Mahalaxmi Ganapati Temple at the edge of Ganapati High School Road to Hampankatta circle.
Saraswat Education Society, which has a history of 145 years, under which the above institutions function, said that this is an initiative aimed at showcasing the patriotism of the students of these schools, which will be first of its kind in Karnataka. Students of these institutions participating in Bharat Scouts and Guides, Sevadal, NCC air wing, naval wing, and NSS students will be taking part in this initiative.
The flag will be unveiled at 7.45 am on August 15 and handed over to the students. Secretary of the managing committee, Mahesh L Bondal, and executive officer, A S Ramachandra Rao, said that this programme will be dedicated to the memory of freedom fighters, brave soldiers who sacrificed everything for the sake of the nation, patriotic citizens and people involved with the protection and security of the country.
A release from the society said that leading banks, industries, organizations and institutions from the city have sponsored this programme.
