Pune/Mumbai, Aug 15 (IANS): Maharashtra Governor C.V. Rao hoisted the tricolour in Pune and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis unfurled the national flag in Mumbai to mark the 69th Independence Day celebrations on Saturday.
Rao unfurled the tricolour and took the salute at a function in Council Hall Pune in the presence of a large number of dignitaries, civil and military officials, the district guardian minister Girish Bapat and others.
In Mumbai, Fadnavis hoisted the national flag at a function in Mantralaya complex in the presence of his cabinet ministers, Chief Secretary S. Kshatriya, Director-General of Police Sanjeev Dayal and other top officials.
The opposition Congress also held a special function for Independence Day celebrations at the party headquarters where Mumbai unit president Sanjay Nirupam unfurled the tricolour and took a salute.
Central Railway general manager Sunil Kumar Sood hoisted the national flag at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus while Western Railway general manager G.C. Agrawal unfurled the tricolour at its Churchgate headquarters, in the presence of a large number of officials, staffers and commuters.
Schools, college, housing complexes and private organisations also held their own celebrations to mark the 69th Independence Day, singing national anthem and other patriotic songs, besides greeting other.
Reports of similar peaceful celebrations were received from other parts of the state in all districts, along with enthusiastic participation from the youth and general public, amid tight security.
